Robert Clowes is chairman of The Brighton Salon, and divides his time between Lisbon and Brighton. He visiting research and teaching fellow at the Centre for Research in Cognitive Science, University of Sussex and also the Philosophy of Language Institute at the New University of Lisbon. He is currently completing his book:Being Human after Facebook Rob has worked to develop the strands of the Salon that have dealt with technology, energy and the understanding of human mind and subjectivity today. In association with the Institute of ideas he recently produced and chaired the meeting The Future of Collaboration: Sharing and Work in the Networked Age. There is a write-up by Sean Bell here and also some video kindly taken and uploaded by Tom Coady. Some recent writings: The New Public Space Culture Wars, October 2009 (a review of Anna Minton's book Ground Control for the cultural review website Culture Wars). The Dialect of Wearing an iPod Spiked. "The iPod has been one of the most talked-about technologies of the past seven years. Since its introduction in 2001, it has sold 100million units worldwide. More than 4,000 accessories have been created to work with the iPod and, unlike many other gadgets that are bought and then discarded, there is evidence that the iPod plays a central role in the everyday life of its users." (read on at Sp!ked) Review of Art House from the 2008 Brighton Festival (incidentally we are planning to develop a citizen reviews website for the 2010 Festival). One Salon we originally programmed for Brighton Fusion: Cheap Energy for All? was picked up and then developed for the 2008 battle of ideas. You can see some footage here. I also produced the session on The Green New Deal for the 2009 festival. Some audio here. He recently worked on programming the Salon's involvement with the White Night Art's Festival (hopefully the video will turn up at some point).
Rob's main work at the University of Sussex (and now the New University of Lisbon) is on the Philosophy of Cognitive Science and increasingly the Philosophy of Technology. Much of this is of a technical nature but I'm currently working on a series of articles for Culture Wars to introduce some of the more important themes to a non-specialist audience. In the meantime if you really can't wait here is some of the more 'take-no-prisoners' stuff ...
Clowes, R., and Seth, A.K. (2008). Axioms, properties, and criteria: Roles for synthesis in the science of consciousness. Artificial Intelligence in Medicine. 44:94-104 [pdf] (special issue on artificial consciousness). Rob - when not writing his book - is currently on acting duty in Portugal where he will be performing in a production of Hamlet for the Lisbon Players.
